Ace Moist Snuff:

Building a Brand That Gets Noticed On The Shelf.

A young entrepreneur approached [ZDI] looking to break into the moist snuff chewing tobacco market. He had created a great product: four flavors of high-quality tobacco under the brand “Ace Moist Snuff.” Despite excellent initial market acceptance, sales performance began to wane, and he cited packaging as an area for improvement.

His goal was to create a new and stronger brand that could compete with the large and established national brands that controlled the lion share of the market (Skoal, Copenhagen, Grizzly, et al); plus, he needed to stand out on an already crowded shelf. His target demographic was male, 21 years and older, and he wanted to project a more masculine, even “outlaw” image that would appeal to consumers of chewing tobacco. Suggested elements included skulls, birds of prey, military and American iconography, and playing card symbols based on the brand name “Ace”.

Building The Brand

Establishing the logo mark was the first step, since this essential visual asset would set the entire tone for the brand. We explored and experimented with various directions took and styles as we sought to find the right look for the brand.

This teamwork was vital for us in choosing the logo mark we all felt had the most potential.

With the product ready to hit the shelves, our attention turned to getting the word out. We scheduled a photo shoot to produce visuals to be used later for advertising, Web site development and marketing.
